Lucca is a small, gentle, elegant Renaissance town in Tuscany
I was privileged to visit beautiful and small Lucca on sunny warm Sunday in April. I really enjoyed its small piazzas, churches and Sunday outdoor market, flea market, il mercatino delle pulci (mercato) in several piazzas in the small town centre. The little Tuscan town of Lucca feels like a place where time decided to slow down. Firenze feels often too crowded by tourists, Lucca offered beauty, but also peace and space.
Encircled by perfectly preserved Renaissance walls, the whole historic center becomes a kind of living storybook. You can actually walk or cycle along the top of those walls, shaded by trees, with views of terracotta rooftops and distant hills.
Lucca is a small and elegant Renaissance city in northern Tuscany, about 20 km from Pisa and about 70 km from Florence.
What makes Lucca special:
Renaissance city walls (Le Mura)
Today: a tree-lined pedestrian and cycling promenade encircling the city (~4 km)
Urban fabric
Narrow medieval streets, Roman street grid still visible
Traffic-restricted historic center → quiet and livable
Best to walk or rent a bicycle in Lucca
Signature landmarks
Piazza dell'Anfiteatro – oval square built on a Roman amphi theatre footprint
Torre Guinigi – tower with oak trees growing on the roof
Duomo di San Martino – cathedral with important artworks
Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) was born in Lucca. His early musical environment was shaped by the city’s strong sacred music tradition. Lucca’s churches and cathedral life were effectively his first conservatory. Puccini´s famous music incl. He became one of the most important opera composers after Verdi, with works such as:
La Bohème
Tosca
Madame Butterfly
Turandot
His style is known for:
emotional intensity (verismo influence)
memorable, lyrical melodies
strong sense of drama and character psychology
Hopefully I get the opportunity to visit soon one opera of Puccini.
I love music by Puccini and Verdi, great Italian musicians. Their music lives forever.
Lucca stands out as a complete, preserved microcosm of Tuscan urban life. Lucca is less crowded than major cities like Pisa and Firenze, but culturally rich, architecturally beautiful, and highly livable.
